Like most young girls I was one of those horse-mad youngsters who drove the family nuts. They finally gave in and bought me a pony just after my 13th birthday. He was all of about 13.3hh and quite likely part Arabian to boot, and me being at least 5'9" even then! His name was Hawke.
After about 12 months it was definitely time to move upwards and my next horse was a Thoroughbred ex-racehorse by the official name of Cherry Jacques, aka Sam, who was supposed to have been a pretty good sprinter too. Sam was 16.2hh and quite a bit larger than my first pony. Being a thoroughbred he also had a mouth like iron and canter meant flat gallop - made for very interesting One Day Events. We actually placed 6th in the first Queensland State Championship Pony Club One Day event, Novice!
After I had had Sam for about 4 yrs he broke down with severe joint degeneration, as a result of his earlier racing days. He was retired to a friend's property. Next boy on the block was Nimbus, a grey partbred Arabian gelding, who was followed by Bundaberg a lop-eared thoroughbred gelding.
These two were followed by a horseless time when I finished college and started work and moved out of home, then got married and moved to the Gold Coast. After we purchased our first property and built our home on acreage, I saw a small advert for a part Arab mare in foal with a return service. Just had to go and see her.
Of course we bought her and Kai Hai Arabians was born. As this mare was not registered we called her Kai Hai Connista (by Shahreza) and her first foal Kai Hai Raindancre (by Santarabia The Caliph). Our first two purebred mares were Picadilly Sobreena in foal to Triple A Midnite and Salicia (Gloaming), and stallion Scimitar Desert Prince (*Abiram x Flamenco).
Now, 29 yrs later our current stallion is Ibn Sterling Shaklan, and mares are Kyang Shahmel, Kai Hai Shaai'Angel, Kai Hai Khaatya, Kai Hai Sterling Neelaah, Kai Hai Magic Aaria and Kai Hai Sterling Amitaa (pend.)
